Sheepadoodle (Sheepdog Poodle mix) Information

The Sheepadoodle is a cute designer dog which is guaranteed to melt your heart with its looks. This teddy-bear like the dog is a cross between an Old English Sheepdog and a standard Poodle. They have a broad head with a long muzzle and oval shaped eyes.  Their eyes are mostly brown colored, some individual may inherit the blue eyes of the Old English Sheepdog breed. These dogs are intelligent, lovable and extremely family oriented.

History

The origination of this crossbreed dog took place in the United States of America. The US army developed the Sheepadoodle dog in the 1960s as a military police dog.

Temperament and Behavior

The Sheepadoodle dogs are very gentle and calm in nature. The dog is a good playmate for the children which makes it an ideal pet. They are highly intelligent and are full of energy. Training the dogs can be a tricky thing. Some dogs may inherit the obedient trait of the Poodle parent and some the independent nature of the sheepdog. Depending on that, you need to decide on the training process. These are family oriented dogs and don’t like to stay alone for long without their owner. They love to take part in the family activities. They usually get along with people of all age group which makes them an excellent family pet.

Sheepadoodle Care

Exercise

The Sheepadoodle needs plenty of structured exercise routines to keep it mentally and physically fit. These dogs tend to get a bit heavy with growing age can develop joint problems and obesity. Take the dogs on lag walks and jogging session. Allow the play inside in an enclosed area without any leash. You can take them to a nearby dog park for socialization. Sheepadoodles love swimming and taking them to places like lakes or rivers will be a great exercise regimen for them.

Grooming

The Sheepadoodle’s coat comes in straight and curly nature too which requires grooming regularly. Brush their fur a weekly two to three times and trim their hair if required. Trim the hair around their eyes. Check their ears and clean them regularly to prevent infection.

Health problems

It is a healthy breed which has no reports of major illness. Some genetically developed issues might bother them like hip dysplasia and ear infection. They may encounter few other health issues like Renal disorders, Von Willebrand disease, Epilepsy, Dilated cardiomyopathy, Patellar luxation, Sebaceous adenitis, and bloat.

Training

The intelligence and eager to please the owner disposition of these dogs makes them fairly trainable. Training sessions of these dogs must be firm and consistent. Start socializing the dog right from the age of puppyhood. Some dogs may show the independent trait of the English Sheepdog. Dogs with this demeanor may pose a little challenge for the trainer. Give them basic obedience training to follow commands like ‘SIT’ ‘STAY’ and ‘DOWN’. Praise the dogs on responding to your words positively.

Feeding/Diet

The Sheepadoodle is a large dog and requires high-quality dry dog kibbles to meets its age, size and activity levels.  These dogs tend to become obese, and they may suffer from the issue of bloat. You have to feed your dog keeping in mind those factors. You can feed your Sheepapoo dog daily 3 to 4 cups of dry dog food divided into two meals.
